The word "Colorado" comes from the Spanish rio colorado, meaning "red river" which flows through gorges of reddish stone.
The countrys unofficial national anthem, celebrating the physical wonders of the North American continent, from sea to shining sea. The words are those of an 1893 poem by Wellesley College English professor Kathine Lee Bates, who was inspired by a climb up Pikes Peak. The music is by Samuel A Ward.
