Sperm whales travel long distances, following the migrations of the their prey. The adult females and the calves usually confine their movements to the latitudes between 40 degrees north and 40 degrees south of the equator. The range of adult males extends north to the Bering Sea and the south to Antarctica; they join the females and young in the tropics during the breeding season. The whales can be seen off the coast of Washington in late March.
