Georgia sided with the Confederacy at the outbreak of the Civil War and seceded. Georgia was readmitted to the Union in 1868, then expelled again for refusing the ratify the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (which protected the right to vote regardless of race, color or previous condition of servitude); it regained statehood permanently in 1870.
